The International Society for Stem Cell Research, a nonprofit scientific organization established in 2002, through The Sherwood Group, Inc., the society’s professional association management firm, seek a full-time Scientific Affairs Manager to manage projects, assist the ISSCR Science Director in producing the ISSCR Web site and newsletter, coordinate international meeting agendas, and serve as an ISSCR representative and trusted voice for the stem cell community.

The Scientific Affairs Manager reports directly to the Executive Director and Science Director. He/she consults with the ISSCR board of directors and committee chairs as appropriate to ensure that the society’s scientific communication and oversight is relevant, accurate, comprehensive, and appropriate and works with headquarters staff to execute programs on time and within budget.

The position is located in Deerfield, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago and the Scientific Affairs Manager will be an employee of The Sherwood Group, the ISSCR’s management firm. Duties:Specifically, the Scientific Affairs Manager is responsible for:

• Oversight of the Registry of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Line Provenance project. The Science Administrator receives and collates information and documentation pertaining to the derivation of human embryonic stem cell lines, coordinates the oversight processes, and provides access to such data for local stem cell research oversight bodies, or funding bodies as well as individual researchers and laboratories throughout the world. Writes grants in support of the Registry.
• Oversight and coordination of new initiative to provide information on the web site regarding unproven stem cell therapies. Responsible for developing and implementing systematic processes to receive, collate and vet information with volunteer expert committees, and maintaining current information. Writes grants in support of the initiative.
• Coordination and oversight of agenda and program chair/committee for regional meetings.
• Staffing of designated committees with activities that require an understanding of scientific content.
• Work with the ISSCR staff and volunteer leaders to identify and evaluate benefits that will serve the organization’s mission and growing membership.
• Assist the Science Director in the writing, editing and collecting of content for the ISSCR Web site, the monthly newsletter, and specific tasks to be determined.
• Serve as a spokesperson and representative for ISSCR, communicating with and developing educations programs for the general public, and acting as ISSCR liaison to related organizations and media.
• Assist with grant-writing to support ISSCR’s professional and public communication and other scientific initiatives

Travel:
Travel to the ISSCR Annual Meeting, and 2 additional national or international meetings per year as required.
Qualifications:• Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles and concepts of molecular and cell biology in the context of cell therapy and regenerative medicine. A PhD with experience in stem cell biology preferred.
• Excellent written and oral communicator and strategic thinker capable of communicating clearly to a variety of audiences worldwide. Ability to synthesize information from medical/scientific literature and communicate responses to complex questions in scientific and layperson’s terms.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of and connections to the international scientific community.
• Knowledge of electronic and/or print publishing fields a plus.
